Built in the old garage of the teachers' residence at the Tasman District High School, our studios embrace Tardis technology... small on the outside, large on the inside. The whole building is just 8 metres by 5.2 metres and comprises an on-air studio (3.7mx3.2m), a production studio (3.5mx2.7m) a vocal booth (2.4mx 2.0m) an office/reception area (4mx2.4m) and a music library (2.7x1.9m). Essential services and life-support systems, such as toilet facilities, are provided as part of the school infrastructure.
Sound transfer from one area to another is minimised by the use of 13mm plaster sheet, mineral wool insulation, solid 35mm thick chipboard doors and double-glazed windows (12mm and 6mm plate glass). Reverberation is minimised through the use of non-parralel walls and ceiling and carpeted surfaces on floor and walls. All in all, it works extremely well.
